John Rafferty

John Rafferty Thunder Bay Rainy River NDP Federal Candidate

John has been working very hard over the years, knocking on doors and attending community events to understand the issues throughout the riding.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1978, he spent a season at Magnus Theatre in Thunder Bay.  He then returned to university and with his Bachelor of Education, volunteered to teach high school in Nigeria for two years under the auspices of World University Service of Canada.  Returning to Canada, the far north beckoned and John taught in Yellowknife and later became the first High School Principal in Rankin Inlet.  On a cold, snowy day in late winter, he was asked to return to Africa as a Field Director for WUSC. He lived first in Lesotho and then Botswana, for a total of three and a half years.

Back in Canada, John earned a Diploma in Broadcasting at Confederation College.  He worked as the afternoon talk show host at CKPR until he ran in his first Federal Election in 2000.  In 1995, he started Rafferty Communications, a small business producing voiceovers for health, safety and training cd-roms.  John is also active in both Rainy River School Boards as a musician with Learning Through The Arts and as an occasional teacher.  John believes in the trade union movement and is a proud member of OECTA, and an honourary member of CEP.

John also believes in lifelong learning and received a Certificate in Dispute Resolution from Lakehead University in 2000.  John is committed to community and volunteerism and is always willing to lend a hand.   John and Pamela have five fabulous children.
